Rabbit longevity: evidence and limits

Read the RSPCA rabbit care evidence behind our planning model, how age is handled, and why care factors have no numerical lifespan adjustments.

Sources and methodology

Care guidance describes what may be typical under suitable conditions. A median age at death in veterinary records describes a different population and is not remaining life expectancy. We do not mix those measures or claim a validated rabbit life table. There is not enough verified evidence here to quantify breed, size or care effects.

Model: rabbit-lifespan-v0.1

The internal model uses total planning age = (current age³ + reference age³)^(1/3), with reference ages 8, 10 and 12. The middle value and cubic curve are internal assumptions, not measurements from the RSPCA. This preserves time already lived and reduces additional planning time with age. Older-rabbit estimates are especially uncertain.

This is an unvalidated educational planning model, not an individual prognosis or a confidence interval. Only age changes the numbers. Breed, size, country and care answers guide discussion, without adding or subtracting years.

Rabbit lifespan calculator

The estimate uses the RSPCA care range and a separate, versioned internal age curve. The full uncertainty cannot be represented by a single number.

Educational planning only, not veterinary advice or a guarantee. If eating changes or droppings reduce or stop, contact a veterinarian immediately.
